Solar & Customer Generation - New Jersey

Submit a Distributed Generation Program Application

Follow the guidelines below for the installation of distributed generation systems.

The interconnection applications for New Jersey are classified by the level of complexity and are based on the aggregate system rating. The aggregate system rating is the sum of the ratings of all electric power producing equipment:

  • Level 1 — Inverter based installation with aggregate rating of 10kW or less that meets the N.J.A.C. 14:8-5.3 certification requirement, and does not incorporate energy storage.
  • Level 2 — Installation with aggregate rating of 2MW or less that meets the N.J.A.C. 14:8-5.3 certification requirement, and does not incorporate energy storage
  • Level 3 — Non-certified equipment and/or does not qualify for Level 1 or 2 review. Systems that incorporate energy storage must follow the Level 3 review process.
Guidelines for Level 1

Prior to Installation:

1. Submit the following with your application:

  • A letter of authorization by the customer (if the applicant is an agent for the customer)
  • Part 1 – Interconnection Application/Agreement (There is no application fee.)
  • Three-line electrical schematic
  • Copy of the manufacturer’s data sheet and certification for the equipment
  • Site plan

2. We’ll review the application and design.

3. We’ll either approve the installation of the system, or explain why we couldn’t approve it.

Upon completion of installation:

1. Submit the following:

2. We’ll witness the verification test (if not waived).

3. If the verification test passes, we’ll return the executed application/agreement to the applicant. (The system should not be put in service, except for initial testing, until after the verification test.)

4. If the installation is eligible for net metering, we’ll change the revenue meter.

Guidelines for Level 2 and Level 3

Prior to Installation:

1. Submit the following with your application:

2. We’ll review the application and design. We may require additional information depending on the complexity of the design.

3. We’ll either approve the installation of the system, or explain why we couldn’t approve it.

Upon completion of installation:

1. Send in Attachment B – Certificate of Completion and proof of electrical inspection.

2. We’ll witness the verification test.

3. If the verification test passes, we’ll return the executed net metering agreement to the applicant. (The system should not be put in service, except for initial testing, until after the verification test.)

4. If the installation is eligible for net metering, we’ll change the revenue meter.

Installations Up To 2MW

Follow the applicable technical guidelines below for installation of systems that generate up to 2MW:
